What is a Designer Baby?

“A baby whose genetic makeup has been artificially selected by genetic engineering combined with in-vitro fertilization to ensure the presence or absence of particular genes or characteristics."
- Oxford Dictionary
How it works

Genetic engineers alter the DNA of an embryo and then insert it into the mother's womb through In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF).  Through another process known as preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), genetic engineers grow an embryo to the eight cell stage and then screen the embryo for the presence or absence of a particular gene and then introduce it into the mother's womb through IVF.
